Knitting Supplies for Vintage Knitting Patterns
Knitting is done as a hobby or a pastime. However, knitting supplies must be chosen with utmost care. Knitters usually have their own preferences such as some use long needles, while others prefer short needles. A circular needle is the choice of others who do Afghans. A circular needle is preferred as it accommodates numerous stitches and the stitches do not fall from the needle as you can push the work to the needle edge when you are not working on it. Identifying mistakes is easier in circular needles and is easier to measure the Afghan length as well.
Needles are available in many sizes and types such as single pointed, circular, double pointed and cable needles. Single pointed needles are available in sets of two and are useful for knitting small items such as scarves. Circular needles are apt for knitting Afghans or sweaters. Double pointed needles are available in sets of four. The darning needle is essential to tuck the loose ends. Knitting needles are made of bamboo, steel or plastic. A tape measure is essential to measure the length of the work done. The next supply essential is the scissors for cutting the yarn, big darning needle used for sewing seams. A flat 6" ruler is a compulsory need for knitting. A clear plastic ruler is easier to measure short distances. To determine the gauge an aluminum counter is of immense help. A crochet hook is required to pick the dropped stitches and for finishing the loose ends. Safety pins are used to mark the rows and to hold the stitches and yarn.
Knitting supplies required are many once you decide on pursuing knitting. Many knitting supplies are required only if you intend to carry on for many more years. The other knitting supplies are the stitch holders that come in different lengths and are identical to safety pins. Knitting counters are slipped on the needle point and is convenient in keeping track of the rows, especially while doing sweaters and Afghans. Ring markers are another supplies made of plastic rings and are handy in working intricate patterns. A knitting bag is essential to hold your supplies and to keep things intact. This bag can be any cloth bag of medium size.
A notebook is useful to keep track of stitches of rows. Knitting socks is easy to remember. Even if you are skilled in knitting, you may even knit the same pattern, but the size and pattern variations are better to be noted. This will be convenient and you can develop such notes that may be of great use in the future as well.
